Saimme sisustustekstiili opintojen ohella viime syksynä verhoilla/päällystää opetustilamme työtuolit uudelleen. Projektin suunnittelu lähti liikkeelle siitä lähtökohdasta, että kaikki luokassa olevat työtuolit haluttiin saman värisiksi ja vanhoihin verhoiluihin ajan mittaan kertyneet tahrat piilotettua, siistimmän ja seesteisemmän yleisilmeen luomiseksi luokkatilaan.
Luokassamme olevien työtuolien verhoilut olivat ajan saatossa saaneet pintaansa näkyviä tahroja, sekä työtuoleja löytyi luokasta kolmella eri värisellä verhoilulla varustettuna (sininen, tummansininen ja punainen). Tuolit olivat pääpiirteittäin kuitenkin samanlaisia, pieni säädettävä selkänoja, sekä säädettävä istuin. Lähdimme liikkeelle siitä, että pohdimme päällisen/verhoiluratkaisun teknistä puolta. Ehdotuksia oli opettajien puolelta ilmassa hupputyyppisen ratkaisun muodossa. Mutta opiskelijavoimin tuumimme, että hupputyyppinen ratkaisu, oli se sitten kuminauha varusteinen, tai nyörillä kiristettävä, tai vetoketjulla varustettu, ei työtuoleissa olisi ratkaisuna ollut kovin siisti, eikä edes käytännönläheinen. Istuinosa sekä selkänoja olivat sillä tavalla säädettäviä, että huppuratkaisu olisi ollut käytön kannaltakin hankala, ja aiheuttanut ongelmia tuolin säätömekanismeja käytettäessä.
Last autumn at school, we got to renew our classrooms office chairs by reupholstering them up. The main thought of the project was to update all the different coloured chairs that were stained after years of usage, to be the same coloured, and to create a visually serene atmosphere to the classroom.
Office chairs in our classroom were stained after years of usage, and there were three different coloured chairs (red, dark blue and light blue). Chairs were practically the same by their measurements, and mechanisms. First we started to think about the technical perspective of the implimentation for the upholstery. Teachers suggested us to create a removable cover hoods for the chairs, but we (students) thought, that the cover hoods would have not been a very good looking solution from the visual point of the view, taking into account the whole classroom. Cover hood solution would not either have been very practical, considering the mechanisms of the chairs.

Opettajien ajatus lähti siitä, että huppuratkaisu olisi mahdollistanut päällisten irroittamisen, sekä pesun tarvittaessa. Mutta oppilasvoimin tuumimme, että jos tarkoitukseen hankittaisiin hyvä kangas, joka kestää kulutusta ja hylkii likaa, olisi se tarpeeksi hyvä ja aikaa kestävä ratkaisu, vaikka päällisiä ei voisikaan irrottaa ja pestä.
Näillä perusteilla päädyimme sitten siihen ajatukseen, että toteuttaisimme päällystämisen kiinteämmällä ratkaisulla. Verhoilu kankaaksi valikoitui paloturvallinen, erittäin hyvin kulutusta kestävä kangas, jossa oli likaa hylkivä käsittely.
Teachers thought, that the cover hood would have been the perfect solution for the maintenance of the chairs. It would have been easy to take off the hoods for the wash if they were stained. But we (studients) thought, that perhaps the maintenance problem would be solved by bying a high quality fabric for the upholstery. We thought that if we buy a fabric with high abrasion resistance and dirt-repellent, we could then make a fixed upholstery.
Teachers were ok with the idea, and we decided to make a fixed upholstery for the chairs. We ordered a fireproof fabric with a high abrasion resistance and dirt-repellent.

Istuinosien päällystämisen suunnittelimme niin, että uusi kangas pingoitettiin istuimen päälle nitomalla kangas tuolin alapuolelle reunoista kiinni, eli verhoilutyyppisenä ratkaisuna.

Selkänojan suunnittelu vaatikin sitten hiukan enemmän ajatusta, ja aivonystyröiden käyttöä, sillä selkänojan muoto ja joustamattomuus rajoitti todella paljon hyvän ratkaisun löytymistä. Muutamien protojen valmistamisen kautta ja tarranauha- ja vetoketjukiinnitys pohdintojen myötä päädyimme sitten selkänojankin osalta kiinteään ratkaisuun. Selkänoja päätettiin valmistaa niin, että ompelimme selkänojalle päällisen, joka jätettiin alareunasta avoimeksi paikalleen pujotusta varten. Tämän jälkeen aluki jätetty alareuna harsittiin käsin umpeen.
The back of the chair took a little more effort to design. The form, and inflexibility of the back made the designing challenging. We made a few prototypes with a zipper and velcro, but because of the form, the prototypes didn´t work as we hoped for. Therefore we made the decision to make a fixed upholstery for the back also. We designed it to be first sewed together from the top, and leaving the bottom opened so the chairs back can be threaded in to the cover. After that the bottom was closed stitching by hand.

Kun selkänojan verhoilu oli valmis, tehtiin selkänojan takaosaan vielä ruuveja varten reijät, jotka sitten vielä liimattiin kankaan purkaantumisen estämiseksi. Näin varmistimme, että verhoilu pysyy käytössä mahdollisimman pitkään hyvänä.
When the chair backs upholstery was ready, we carefully made holes in the fabric, so that later on we could get the screws back on their places. We glued the holes to prevent the fabric from unraveling. Gluing was an important deed to do, so that the chairs would stay in good condition for as long as possible.

Selkänoja ruuvattiin takaisin mekanismiin sen jälkeen kun liima oli kuivunut. Komeat tuli, ja luokan yleisilme rauhoittui ja siistiytyi. Tuolit ovat olleet käytössä nyt muutaman kuukauden ajan, ja ovat pysyneet hyvän näköisinä koko käytön ajan.
The back of the chair was screwed back on its place after the glue was dry. The upholstery succeeded, and the chairs got a new life for the future months and years to come.
